[OpenWrt-Users] Recommendation for replacement for TP-Link WDR3600 and similar

Dear all,

I am not sure if this list is dead or if there is anyone left reading
this. I see lots of people asking, but no one replying. I hope someone
has an answer for me.

Nevertheless. I have a TP-Link WDR3600 running 15.05, which is working
pretty good as I have added a USB device to get some more space and be
able to install some stuff.

I need a similar device in the near future. I can get all kinds of
TP-Link Routers, but either
- there is no USB and too little Flash to do anything useful (e.g.
WDR841N)
- it is no longer sold and only available as second hand (WDR3600)
or
- I have no clue if the device is actually supported (Archer C5 1200,
Archer C7, WDR4300, ..) as the wiki pages are, well, overflowing with
stuff but containing little information.

So, I would like to ask, if anyone can recommend a router with the
following specs:

- Gigabit
- USB (or lots of Flash)
- does not need wifi
- low power comsumption
- works with OpenWRT

It does not have to be Wifi router, could be a small router-only
device, as long as it works. Also it does not have to be a TP-Link, I
just got the impression that is the one brand that works best with
OpenWRT.

Thanks in advance.

Hello-
I use and Archer C7 V2 as an access point. Seems to run very well. I
did have to install kernel modules (via opkg install) to get one of
the radios working. I'm currently running CHAOS CALMER (15.05-rc3,
r46163) with a 137 day uptime.

There may be issues with the newer ones, and the FCC lockdown- but I
believe there are ways around that still (tftp'ing the image still
works I believe)
I've been considering buying another as a backup, until some
resolution may occur with the FCC lockdown (software restructuring,
etc).. but perhaps the only real path forward is building little x86
boxes....

In Germany there a lots and lots of different Archers, at least when
searching for it on amazon or ebay etc. And I am not sure if I can get
the real c7 v2.

And: Can I switch the wifi off completely? I do not need it, but
keeping it running might enlarge the power consumption. If only the
841ND had a USB port, it just uses 1W with wifi turned off...

Did you measure the power consumption?

Thanks for the tip. According to the Table of Hardware I should avoid
the v4, as it does not seem to be supported.

Hello, Johannes

Yes, it looks exactly like that. I can't say that is for sure a V2,
however. That said, a search of the internet shows up with V1
(unsupported wifi chip for one band), V2, and V3.

According to Wikidev, the V2 and V3 look almost identical, perhaps
losing the antenna connectors?
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_Archer_C7_v2.x
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_Archer_C7_v3.x

Additionaly, there is a note on the forum here that seems to indicate
V3 should be supported by V2 image (although no additional followup):
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=61574

I'd imagine you can turn off wifi the same way as with any other OpenWRT router.
I do not know if or how much this affects power consuption.
I have not measured power consumption, Sorry.

If i think of it this week, perhaps i'll order a new C7 and see what
version i get.. and if v3 do a test run to help verify that it does
work.

take care

That site puzzled me, as it takes quite some time to grasp which
version of what is supported or not.

The 841ND has a mechanical switch to disable wifi, so the wifi part is
really cut off and not consuming power.

No worries. If what Valent wrote works out, that would be the cheaper
option. And it seems easier to get the right version...

Thanks for your feedback, it is highly appreciated.

That site isn't about support or not supported, it is simply a site
that provides hardware specifications. V2 is supported I know because
I have one. That site shows that the V3 hardware is perhaps identical
with respect to chipsets. s

Thanks for the tip, sounds interesting. Actually I was hoping for
something a little older, where people have been using this for some
time. Otherwise I fear there might be little nits and problems, as is
with all new hardware...
